6 Ways To Achieve Your Goals | Lorna Duffy

“All personal achievement starts in the mind of the individual. Your personal achievement starts in your mind. The first step is to know exactly what your problem, goal or desire is.”

I hope you’ve all had a great weekend. The last couple of days won’t be forgotten anytime soon for one specific reason – I completed my Masters in Marketing! After 12 long months, endless assignments, exams, an addition to coffee and 20,000 words later … I am finished. To say I felt like I had been released from prison is a serious understatement, it was a tough year but I regret nothing. The feeling of freedom, relief and happiness combined once you click that ‘submit for grading’ button really is something else. Completing a Masters degree has been on my ‘to-do list’ for years so to finally have it ticked off my list left me with a great sense of achievement.

For those of you still considering college courses, career paths or even globetrotting – creating goals, achieving them and staying motivated in the process are all essential. I’m not an expert when it comes to creating goals but I do have a few simple tips that should help you on your way. Here are 6 steps I follow that will hopefully be of some use.

Create a detailed list of Goals

We all have to start somewhere. 1: Treat yourself to a new notebook! 2: Write down your goals. Whether your goals are big or small be as specific as you can when writing them down. In my opinion, the more detail you include for each, the clearer the goals will be and the easier they will be to achieve.

Make your Goals consistent with your Values

Do what you value first so you don’t find yourself unmotivated. When you create a list of your highest values and then align your goals with them; you will have a sense of being on purpose and are more likely to be motivated and become more consistent.

Break it down
Breaking everything down is the only way to go in my opinion. Whenever i’m trying to achieve something, I break the task into steps and work through them bit by bit. Once everything is broken down you won’t feel overwhelmed. When there’s something I want to do, I figure out exactly what I need to do each week or each month to work towards achieving it. This helps me to be more productive with my time.

Review Goals Daily

In order to achieve your goals reviewing them regularly must become routine. Review your list every morning  and evening. Try and imagine your completed goals and how your life will look and feel as a result. This is a great way to train your brain to expect your goals to materialise.

Keep Track of Progress & Set a Deadline
When you start to see progress, it’ll motivate you to do more. At the end of each week, write down the progress you’ve made so far. This will show you that you actually are making progress and it will give you the encouragement to keep going.

Don’t get Discouraged

Don’t let things get you down! You will either achieve your goals as you imagined or receive the insights into what may be necessary to reach your goals.  I like to see this as feedback of what you may need to do more of, less of, or not do at all. Following this, stay focused on what you want to achieve and you will find ways to break through barriers. Make sure you celebrate every success no matter how small they might be and take note of your accomplishments so that you can begin to see how you are achieving your goals.
