For those of you following me on Snapchat (duffyloikes) you might have seen some of my Kilkenny snaps over the weekend. I had the nicest time with my partner in crime. We were lucky enough to escape from Dublin for a night away before all of the Christmas madness. 

From cosy pubs coffee and cobbled streets to breathtaking views and of course the Kilkenny Castle, this city really does have something for everyone. I’ve put together a list of things to do and see and places to visit. If you’re a ‘foodie’, enjoy a few social drinks, shopping and sightseeing or if you’re in process of planning a weekend away then this blog post is for you.

KILKENNY

Kilkenny is only an hour and a half by train from Dublin so it is perfect for a getaway.

Kilkenny City and County offers a variety of entertainment – whether it’s the buzzing nightlife, exceptional food, medieval heritage, cultural attractions, outdoor activities, Boutique shopping or the many festivals all year long – Kilkenny has a lot to offer. For those looking to experience the best Kilkenny culture, take advantage of one of the many tours and trails such as scenic walking or cycling tours.

There is a wide range of accommodation sure to suit all budgets and styles. From top quality family friendly 4 star hotels and guesthouses ranging from ultra-modern to Georgian splendor to self-catering accommodation for those looking for home comforts and plenty of budget friendly hostels. Accommodation options available in Kilkenny suit every visitor.

EAT | DRINK

Our favourite spot for food and drinks in Kilkenny was Billy Byrnes Pub. It is just down the road from the train station and it was only a 10 minute walk from our hotel. The staff are really friendly, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was brilliant. I would highly recommend their steak. Delish!! If you’re in Kilkenny on a Saturday night they have entertainment from 9pm so it would be an ideal spot for a night out.

Other places worth trying out are Langtons bar and restaurant and Matt the Miller. Overall, there is a buzzing atmosphere/night life in Kilkenny and definitely an ideal spot for a Saturday night out.

ACCOMMODATION

We stayed in the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel which is located right next to Kilkenny City landmarks such as the Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice’s Cathedral, Medieval Rothe House and just a few steps away from boutiques, theatres, bars and restaurants. We stayed in one of their Junior Suites, it was spacious and the bed was so comfortable. If you want to pamper yourself then make sure you check out there spa. They also have complimentary Wi-Fi and secure car-parking. Finally, their breakfast was fit for a queen. One word…yum!

TRANSPORT

As I was saying, Kilkenny is just an hour and a half outside of Dublin so we caught a train via Irish Rail from Heuston station and arrived into Kilkenny just before noon. Such a short distance away so ideal for a mini-break away.

THE MEDIEVAL MILE

Kilkenny has a medieval heritage that can be seen throughout its narrow streetscapes; its historical buildings and its landmarks. One of my favourite things about Kilkenny is that you can explore  everything it has to offer on foot.

The Medieval Mile Passes are €29 and give you admission to Kilkenny Castle, Rothe House, Smithwick’s Experience, St. Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny Hurling Way, Kilkenny Cycling Tours, Castle Express Train, Kilkenny City Tours Train and the Kilkenny Ghost Tour.

KILKENNY CASTLE

Kilkenny Castle has to be my favourite places in Kilkenny. It is located in the city centre, a must if you are planning a trip to Kilkenny soon. The grounds are beautiful and if you’re a photography nut like myself then you won’t be stuck for taking photos. Such a beautiful place!

YULEFEST

Rediscover the wonder of Christmas with Kilkenny’s festival of music, food, craft and entertainment for friends and family. The Festival Trail brings you through cobbled streets and slipways of Kilkenny. An ideal way to see and experience everything!

ROTHE HOUSE AND GARDEN

Rothe House is another must! It is a unique Tudor merchant’s townhouse, built between 1594 and 1610. The property comprises of three houses, three enclosed courtyards and a large garden to the rear. The house is open to the public and visitors can make their way through the houses, courtyards and gardens on a self-guided tour.

SHOPPING

You’d be crazy not to pop into a few shops when you’re there. My favourite had to be Folkster. They always have the most stylish pieces in store. From high street stores and boutiques to shopping centres – there is something for everything! Here are a few I suggest popping into:
