#IndustryInsights: Lorna Duffy

This week we had the pleasure of chatting with fashionista and blogger Lorna Duffy all about what it’s like to work the Irish blog scene…

How did you first get into the industry?

I have been working in the fashion industry for about 5 years so I have always had a ‘passion for fashion’. Over the years, I have written one or two travel/lifestyle blogs but I wanted something purely based on fashion and my experiences working in the fashion industry. When I was working at London Fashion Week last September I met Anna Wintour, she has always been a huge inspiration to me so it was then that I decided to start my blog. I thought to myself, if I’m going to all these fashion events I might as well be writing about them. – Meeting her was definitely the cherry on top last year. So, shortly after working at London Fashion Week last September I created my blog Fashion Boss.

Can you describe a typical work day?

This varies each week. I am doing my Masters at the minute so I am juggling that and Fashion Boss so I like to get up early and get going asap. I’ve never been one to sit around, I always need to be running around and keeping busy.  At the start of each week I make a plan, this could be a blog to do list, prepping for my next Fashion Boss Style Guide shoot or setting dates for meetings.

What motivates you?

I’ve always been a motivated person, once I am passionate about something that drives me to keep going.

How do you integrate social media into your career as a blogger?

I have always been addicted to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter so my blog is another great excuse to spend more time on each. Social media channels are a great way to reach your audience. Using a variety is always a must for any blogger in my opinion. For example; certain Fashion Boss readers might only use Twitter whereas others might only use Instagram or Facebook so it is important to have a consistent flow of your work through all of your social media channels.

What has been your biggest career achievement to date?

That’s a tough one! Being nominated in the 2015 Irish Beauty Blog Awards and in the 2015 Blog Awards Ireland for Best Fashion Blog and Innovation were great achievements after just 12 months! I was delighted to be a runner up in both categories. It’s hard to believe I started my blog one year ago, time flies when you’re having fun! Other than that I was lucky enough to collaborate with so many amazing brands along the way.

Have you any advice for people thinking of entering the industry?

Get out there and have fun! Go to as many events as you can because it is a great way to meet new people both bloggers and people in the fashion industry.

Is there anyone that influenced you to take this career path?

There are so many inspirational bloggers out there. Chiara Ferragni,Kayla Seah, Gizele Oliveira, the list goes on! They all have a mix of different styles which I love and they are all so creative with a camera.

Where do you hope to see yourself / your business in 5 years?

So far, I have had an overwhelming response from my readers which has been great so I would love to continue to build Fashion Boss as a blog and as a brand. I have some exciting plans to come – all will be revealed soon…

What is your pet peeve about working in the industry?

That’s a good question. I would have to say lack of originality. In my eyes plagiarism is the cardinal sin of fashion blogging. Why start a blog if you are just going to borrow material from someone else? Be creative and be original!

What do you do to relax and unwind after a long days work?

I love to curl up on my couch with endless cups of tea and catch up on some of my favourite shows on Netflix.

Check out Lorna’s blog at www.fashionboss.ie to keep up to dat with all of her fantastic style posts.
